1. Neon is not a direct translation of the word “glow.”

Neon is a Greek-derived term meaning “new.” It was used to refer to gasses that did not appear in the list of known elements at the time, such as argon and mercury. These glasses have unique properties; they glow red when electricity flows through them. In English, these glasses are called Neon Glasses. In Japanese, however, they are simply called Neogens (「ネオン系」), which emphasizes their rarity and sophistication. 

Even though neon lamps only started being used in signs after World War Two, neon has been familiar since before then as a type of pinkish-red color produced with mercury vapor. It was used in religious and ceremonial contexts, as well as in art, as early as Roman times. 2. Neon is not just a cool, artificial light.

Glowing letters have been known since at least 1450 BC, when Chinese philosopher Mo Ti discovered that rubbing mercury on silk produced rays of yellowish-white light, which he thought were to be the source of life force from heaven. Centuries later, in ancient Greece, Heron of Alexandria and Hero of Alexandria invented a device that produced the same light using steam. They called it the aeolipile (meaning “spinning ball” from Greek), also known as an “atmospheric ball.” 

It was used mainly for scientific research. This kind of artificial illumination is not just beautiful; it is filled with symbolic meaning. The first exposure to neon signs for many Japanese people was during the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923. The disaster, which killed more than 100,000 people, left Tokyo completely dark at night after power plants were destroyed. One month later in December, Tokyo regained regular electricity service and neon signs started to be used on the Ginza Strip. Since then, the glittering lights of Ginza have been a symbol of prosperity and luxury.

3. Neon signs are not single-use items.

A typical home use neon sign consists of two glass tubes and a bulb, but professional ones consist of up to 15 parts that are connected by thin pieces of wire. The tubes are attached to one another at the top and bottom. They form a loop that allows electricity to flow in an ionized column from one tube to the other, where it heats up the gasses inside and causes them to emit light through ionization and excitation processes. 

The glass tubes are connected to a bulb by a thin wire. To get the desired brightness, many different parts with different functions have been incorporated. For example, there are special reed switches in the tubes for high brightness (as much as 100,000 lumens), and six-way signal “kill switches” that turn off the light in case of failure. Moreover, rare materials such as borosilicate glass and quartz are used to achieve a shiny inner surface and prevent scratches on the outside surface of the tubes from accumulation of dirt or dust.
